After nearly twenty years of vocational ministry I was getting out. I was packing up my books, Bibles and battle scars and moving on: one more casualty of ministry burnout who didn’t have a clue about how I had gotten there.
During a lengthy and uncomfortable conversation with a new mentor about my situation I discovered that I hadn’t done the things necessary to help prevent burnout from happening. In fact, prior to that conversation, I had no clue as to what those things were.
He taught me several keys that have, over the past fifteen years, revolutionized my walk with God and my over all spiritual health. I have adapted them, made them my own and want to share one of them with you.
Do on purpose the things that help you most!
What provides encouragement and life to your spirit? Are there some activities that always seem to nurture your heart? Some might enjoy listening to music, or enjoy the beauty of nature, or enjoy a quiet cup of coffee on the deck. The common denominator here is enjoying the activity. An effective strategy to avoid burnout can start by simply changing your schedule and regularly building some of these activities into your week.
Make them a priority!
Remember, a healthy nurtured spirit is far less susceptible to burnout. Don’t underestimate the restorative nature of connecting an open heart toward God and the simplicity of an enjoyable activity. “He leads me beside quite waters…He restores my soul.” Ps 23.
I think facebook is a great social bookmark that crosses borders and unites millions of people around the world, we must use a tool to convey good wishes for peace and prosperity
