Last week I posted on taking a social media sabbatical for 24 hours every 7-day span. It is based on the desire to "...return to God with all my heart," as it's stated in Jeremiah 24.7. Click to see the original post.
Yesterday was my first 24-hour period with no connection to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo, etc., etc. It was good. I didn't have any major profound "aha!" moments. But I did notice a truth - three truths actually:
- It's good to step away. I realized when I wasn't online, I was more focused on other things like reading or undivided attention on my wife, etc. I think It's good to step away from social media periodically (and not just when sleeping). It's like lifting weights. If I lifted all day everyday, I would injure my muscles. They wouldn't have the opportunity to repair the damage I did to them.
- It's good to stay connected. I'm not going to say social media is all bad. There is a lot God can do (and is doing) through people over tweets and Facebook status updates - not to mention online chats and discussions where 2 or more people are sincerely discussing God, grace, salvation, helping the homeless, etc.
- It's best to maintain an overall average balance. Too much of most things is not a good thing. As my Dad has quoted, "Everything in moderation...even moderation!"
So I'm gonna continue to give the 24-7 sabbatical a try for the next few weeks. My hunch is that I will end up building this into my normal routine. I like how it seems to create a richness about the onlin experience. How about you?
