Imagine hearing that from someone you know. What is your reaction? What do you automatically think? After your initial human reaction, the long term impact on you depends a lot on how you see yourself.
Someone once said, "I died to Christ and you can't hurt a dead person." I'm not sure I totally agree with that, but I think I understand the underlying principle of the statement. If I hide myself in Christ and surrender my need for approval, at the very least I can put a disparaging "idiot" comment into perspective. If it hurts me, I can bring that hurt to Christ and wrestle through it with Him. In this way, I have deepened my walk with Christ (the "idiot" comment helps me grow my spiritual dimension.) Who knows, maybe Christ wants you to see how you HAVE been an idiot and He gives you the strength to admit a shortcoming with genuine humility - and grow!
How do you see yourself? Are you hidden in Christ? Are you able to put "idiot"-type comments in perspective?
What do YOU think?
