Found an interesting story about plants on www.webecoist.com entitled "Gorgeous But Deadly". It describes 13 plants that are incredibly beautiful to look at but unbelievably deadly if touched. Here's an excerpt of the story:
"Doll’s Eyes, Fairy Bells, Miracle Leaf – how can plants with names like these be dangerous? Eat them, and you’ll be sorry you fell for their deceptive names and unassuming appearances. From a tree that can make you go blind to flowers that even kill unsuspecting honeybees, these 13poisonous plants are anything but innocent...some species, such as Ligustrum ovalifolium, contain toxic Glycosides which cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, weakness, cold and clammy skin."
Likewise, ministry leaders are tempted by any number of seemingly "good" opportunities that come their way. It may be a speaking engagement to an influential crowd; a community leadership position; a chance to write for a blog or take a bigger church position - the list is endless.
Just as the beautiful plants are deadly, these opportunities feed the ego but leave the curious leader burned out. Why? Because they aren't handled with prayer. They are rushed into with a resounding "yes" and no one has ever counted the cost.
So the next time you are face to face with a great opportunity, ask yourself: How does this fit with what I'm called to do? Where is the time going to come from? What will I have to say "no" to in order to take on this new thing?
Count the cost and you'll be Serving Strong!
