A little semantics, perhaps. Perhaps not: My son and I are preparing for a half marathon in the Fall. Typically, we say we are "training to run a half marathon." Well, MY SON may be training to RUN a half marathon. I'M training to FINISH it. Big difference.
How are you approaching your life as a people helping professional? Are you trying to RUN? Or are you trying to FINISH? Some of us try to RUN because we think that merely FINISHing isn't good enough. But we try to go too hard too fast and end up never RUNning nor FINISHing because we've "spent our wad", as they say.
RUNning, in the context of this post, is equal to going full out without a consideration for rest and recreation. The mindset is to push, push, push. "There's work to be done," we say in dogmatic style.
FINISHing is a different strategy. Finishing doesn't mean settling for second best. It's a mix of going full out AND swinging back to rest, recreation, regeneration.
I talk with pastors all the time. Never have I met one whose desire is to finish weak. They all want to finish strong. This takes a concentrated effort to weave the habit of "swing" into the fabric of the journey. Swing from execution to planning. Swing from work to rest. Swing from doing to being.
Go for the finish and you'll be Serving Strong!
