At the writing of this Note, she’s got 1.6 million Facebook fans in a very short time. She entered her first status update yesterday. The morning she posted it I watched as hundreds of people clicked on “like” each second. That single status update is now at 108,000+ “likes” and over 20,000 comments. Who is she? None other than Susan Boyle, the overnight success story on the stage of a British talent show, Britain’s Got Talent.
Notice the uproar regarding her stunning voice and plain appearance in one package. This intrigues me. There are those who are pushing for her to get “a makeover.” There are others who like her just the way she is. Yet her popularity worldwide is phenomenal.
In our society, we have put such a premium on good looks with talent. You see it in Hollywood all the time. We have even done this in our churches. Think of all the “Jesus” pictures and movies you’ve seen. They portray Jesus as this handsome, strapping man with nice, long, flowing hair, 0% body fat and perfect teeth. Yet scripture indicates He was not much to look at (“He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.” Isaiah 53.2 NIV). Still He cast out demons, brought back the dead to life, and started a revolution of love exceeding 2,000 years AFTER he walked the earth… not to mention His resurrection from His own death.
Susan Boyle embodies a principle we have long forgotten about Christ: He was ordinary in looks, but He is the essence of love, freedom, and eternal life. Susan Boyle is a reminder to us that Christ was an everyday ordinary human. This makes Him able to identify with us like no other god can claim PLUS He was the Creator of the universe.
As people helpers, we need to remember the God who sustains us. If we think He cannot relate to us, how can we expect Him to be our strength? The case of Susan Boyle is a tremendous reminder to us that Christ was like every one of us. AND He was God.
So the next time you check Susan’s status or read about her in the news, think Christ.
He’s more than a perfect god to be feared.
He’s a personal God to be followed.
Follow the God who understands you and you'll be Serving Strong!
