I am in the middle of one of those infamous home improvement projects. I'm filling in a spot in the wall left by a cabinet we removed from our kitchen. The job involves drywall work. You know, the kind of work that means cutting the pieces of drywall to fit the space, installing them with drywall screws, taping the seams, applying drywall mud, and sanding to a smooth finish.
Now, I have never done this sort of job before. I got the pieces cut and screwed into place. I got the tape (self-adhesive) over the seams. But then came the mud phase. I had no idea what I was doing. After mixing up the ready-made mud, I started slapping it on the wall. I must have put half a bucket on the wall when my wife, Jennie, walked into the room. She asked how it was going and I answered gruffly, "I have no idea what I'm doing."
Jennie promptly went to the laptop and pulled up a do-it-yourself video on installing drywall. We watched the demonstration and I went back to remove most of the unnecessary mud off the wall and back into the bucket.
That all took place yesterday. But here's the REAL learning I gained. Today, I stopped at the store and got a metal trowel and mud pan specially designed for just this sort of project. When I started on the second coat of mud, it was like magic. I felt like a pro! I was mudding like the best of them (a legend in my own mind!)
What made the difference? The right tools. Yesterday, I was using a plastic trowel, trying to get the mud out of the bucket. It was awkward. I felt like I had 2 thumbs. And the wall showed it. But today, I was able to control the mud application much better.
Are you the right tool in God's hands? Do you understand there are people in this world in need of the gifts and abilities only you possess?
One of the greatest barriers to serving strong is trying to be someone we are not. Serving strong means walking in the light God provides and doing all He asks of us. He has a job to do. He has chosen to use us as His tools. He has given us passions and gifts He wants to utilize.
Be the right tool in God's hands and you'll be Serving Strong!
