When stuck on a perplexing challenge in your people-helping profession, one way to break out of the rut is to look at it upside down.
The life coaching term for this is REFRAMING. Here are a couple examples (from Leonard Sweet):
- Don't like to eat seaweed? DO YOU REALIZE that weeat seaweed everyday (yogurt, ketchup, ice cream, toothpaste all contain it). Also known as carageenan, seaweed is an emulsifier. BTW, it's also a de-icer for planes.
- Ever daydream while driving? DO YOU REALIZE that's called a "microsleep". If you microsleep for just 4 seconds at 60 miles per hour, you will have "slept" for the length of a football field.
- Ever wonder how much the US has spent on the Iraq war? DO YOU REALIZE with what we spent on the war in Iraq so far, we could have taken that same money and given each Iraqi $1,000,000.
Reframing has a way of defamiliarizing us with something so that we can rethink it another way. This opens up a whole new world of possibility. So the next time you are stuck on a challenge; the next time you are having a hard time figuring out how to live a balanced life; whatever the perplexity, turn it upside down.
Reframing is part of Serving Strong!
