It's all over the news this morning. Michael Phelps' allegedly smoking dope 3 months after the Olympics and all the attention after his incredible swimming performances. This post is not created to place blame or exonerate him. It is designed to point out the incredible pressure we each face as we lead others in the professions of people helping.
You may not see yourself as a leader. Oh, but you are. There are people watching you. You'd be amazed by the people who consider you their silent mentor. What kind of message are you sending to them?
Serving in the people-helping professions (ministry, healthcare, social service, or caregiving) is a stressful endeavor. You are dealing in human misery. You are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Without a plan to remain personally strong, you can give in the the pressure and allow the profession to destroy you.
What are you doing to set boundaries? What is your plan for margin time? How do you maintain a work/life balance? What do you do to recreate? If you cannot answer these questions, you may be in danger of falling.
I encourage you to take a look at your life and profession today. Consider the risks of your profession. Renew your commitment to a lifestyle of balance and healthy living. The people you serve will be better for it. YOU will be better for it. You will be able to Serve Strong!
