In his book Culture Making, Andy Crouch shows how Christians have approached the world and their cultures in the past.
- Condemning culture was the fundamentalist approach. This involved withdrawing from the world, criticizing culture and often taking a "we're better than them" attitude.
- Critiquing culture followed when many Christians sought to analyze and evaluate the culture but without trying to change anything.
- Copying culture involved being like the culture, making Christian imitations of contemporary music, movies, and heroes.
- Consuming culture is where we are now, with lifestyles, morals, and values no different from anybody else.
- Creating or cultivating culture is Crouch's alternative. This involves dwelling in the culture, affirming what is good, but offering new cultural alternatives that "reshape the horizons of the possible and the impossible."
How do we or our clients make ripples, impact the world, or create culture? Here are only three suggestions, built on Crouch's book:
- Empower others, serving and sharing with them so they impact their worlds.
- Read this sentence: God has given me power to impact readers through my writing. Now rewrite the sentence but replace the italics with your own words. Is that where you change the world?
- Try answering this tough question: "Where have you experienced divine multiplication that exceededs your efforts?" Maybe that's a focus for your culture making.
