In making 2009 the best year ever, you may have a few objectives laid out for yourself to accomplish. But how do you know they are lasting? How do you know you're pursuing what you really need to be pursuing?
Vic Flaming, in one of his blog posts, shares some insight from a book called Coach Anyone About Anything by Porche & Niederer. Here are some filters to run your objectives through so you're sure they are worthy of your time & energy:
Owned
Relevant: Will achieving this objective improve or forward your business (or ministry) or enhance profitability? Will it help fulfill one or more of your life goals? Is it worth doing? When imagining it completed, do you feel truly satisfied?
Measurable: Is this objective able to be measured? Can you tell when it has been accomplished? Have you set a date when it will be done? Without a date to be achieved, it is not a realizable objective.
Achievable: Do you have some sense you can achieve this objective, although you may not see precisely how yet? Or is it a hopeful fantasy or pipe dream?
Inspired: Are you challenged or inspired by this objective? Is it predictable, i.e. merely an extension of the past?
Committed: Are you fully committed to the outcome, regardless of circumstances that may arise, or is this only a “wish” to be accomplished if things go your way?
Spoken: Is your objective in writing and part of your environment to call you to action? Have you communicated this objective to others? Have you made it public? Do you have the support of the key people in your environment?
Coached: Do you have a coach, someone whom you are really willing to have be your coach for this objective? Will you be coachable?
Vic adds a couple of his own filters:
Guided: Are you guided by the Holy Spirit and the Word in regards to this objective? Have you spent time in reflection and meditation in regards to what you want to accomplish? Is it in line with clear teaching in the Word of God?
Replicatable: Are you seeking to develop a process whereby this accomplishment in your own life will be replicatable in the lives of others? Have you identified someone else who could benefit from your involvement in their life in this area as you move forward towards what God would have you to be?
We must understand our time, resources and energy are finite. We can't go all out all the time over every little thing that catches our attention. That kind of living will lead to burnout. Better to have a master plan with objectives that go along with that plan. Run your objectives through these filters today. Ensure you 2009 is the best year ever! You'll be Serving Strong!
