UPDATE NOV 3, 2008: Well, I took the first step. All my files are in a big blue tub sitting in the basement. I also have more files next to the tub which wouldn't fit. Now I'm on to step 2...
Life gets cluttered now and then. My life is no exception. I have household files, old bank statements, mortgage papers, vehicle repair receipts, ... you name it. I've got in all stuffed in a 2-drawer filing cabinet in our laundry room. Oh, and I also have files stuffed in paper bags, Wal-Mart bags, and boxes in the basement.
Here's what it's doing to me: It's bothering me. It's keeping me from being focused on a goal I have recently set to write a book.
Here's what I'm going to do about it: I'm going to tackle the household file problem and create an organized system going forward.
Here's how I'm going to do it:
- First, put all the files in one place in the house. I mean ALL of them.
- Then group the files, papers, and what-not into groupings (insurance, vital papers, finance, etc.)
- Then put them in chronological order - newest on top
- Then purge the oldest papers (unless they need to be kept permanently)
- Then create new file folders for the remaining current files
- Finally, develop a regular updating/purging routine
That's what I'm going to do. Perhaps there is some area in your life that needs some order too. If so, I trust this post has stirred up the little organizer in you. If clutter is keeping you from being focused, do something about it. Break it down into doable steps and then start at it... you'll be Serving Strong!
