As a people helper, you may see a lot of needs of other people in a given amount of time. But what happens when it's YOU who are struggling because someone close to you has passed away?
Louis LaGrand, Ph.D. has written an article on 5 self-care actions to take when this happens. He points out that grief is a "highly stressed filled process demanding enormous amount of energy." This is energy you need to function in life (not to mention the energy you need to pursue your calling to help others).
He offers the following 5 actions (read the article for more detail):
- Take a daily stress break of at least 30 minutes.
- Drink plenty of water and cut back on caffeine use.
- Treat yourself to something you would like.
- Take a daily 10-minute walk.
- Bathe yourself in treasured memories.
Grief is something we each hope we'll never experience but inevitably will at some point in our lives. Taking care of yourself in these times is crucial to eventually getting back to what you love to do - Serving Strong!
