Let's say you want to develop and become better at who you are. You want to take your character to the next level.
You could enroll in a class at a local university. You could attend a series of seminars and conferences. You could read a book. You could subscribe to a podcast. All of these are great options. But there is a way to develop your character. It's commonly overlooked and it's right in your own back yard.
I call it "silent mentoring."
Silent mentoring is a simple 3-step process:
- DETERMINE YOUR SILENT MENTORS. List the people you interact with on a regular basis.
- DETERMINE WHAT YOU WANT TO EMULATE. List the character traits which you admire in these people. What draws you to that person? Perhaps it's being punctual, or remaining calm under pressure, or being transparent.
- DETERMINE YOUR NEXT STEPS. List the few things you can do to begin incorporating those character traits into the fabric of who you are. For some people, it may even be talking with the person who possesses the trait you admire. Ask them how they came to have that trait.
When we are teachable and see the world as a tremendous wealth of opportunities to become better than we are right now, we help ourselves Serve Strong!
