I just read a neat article about a pastor, Rev. Eric Hoheisel, who contemplated his answer to that question (which was part of his application for a 4-month clergy renewal sabbatical from the Lilly Endowment.) His answer? Art. He said it elevates his soul. So he made it the major part of his break from ministry.
Consider a couple quotes from the article:
"Taking a...sabbatical is an important part of clergy 'self-care'."
"People need to learn how to take care of themselves if they're going to take care of a congregation."
"Part of taking care of yourself is to take time away."
For Rev. Hoheisel, it meant taking time away to pursue the thing that elevated his soul - art. Read the entire article.
What is it that makes YOUR heart sing? What elevates YOUR soul? When do YOU take time away from your ministry? DO you take time away from your ministry? If you do, great! If you don't, I urge you to. It's a part of Serving Strong!
