Neat article on raising kids from the website, www.coolpeoplecare.org. They highlight the importance of letting your kids do something you've previously been doing for them before they were at the appropriate level of maturity to it for themselves. Example: let them try to open the door once in a while if they're big enough to do it now. The children get the sense they can do something adults can do. This helps in their development.
At the same time, why not teach them to become increasingly DEPENDENT on Christ? Example: As they begin sensing life's fears and uncertainties, instill in them that prayer is "first and ten" and not "fourth down and punt" (it's the first thing to do when faced with uncertainty.)
Our society has typically applauded a person who is independent. This is fine for things like dressing yourself, eating right, etc. But what about the Lordship of Christ? I think a healthy mix of independence and dependence is key.
I believe teaching our kids to grow up and become dependent is a form of Serving Strong!
