Myles Wearring has written an article on workaholism which appeared on News.com.au. Wearring highlights Andrew Griffith, his work habits and the ramifications.
Interesting how someone can work 7 days a week from 6am until 9pm and still expect to maintain a normal life with a normal marriage. In reality, it leads to a tremendous strain on relationships, weight gain, depression, lack of proper vitamins, and physical problems such as heart attacks.
What did Andrew Griffith begin to do once he woke up from his destructive lifestyle? He began to cut back on his work hours, set boundaries around his weekends, and set a decent number of workday hours. The result? Even though a re-prioritizing of his life left work last on the list, he said professionally he was, "more successful than ever before." He states that revenues increased, as did the quality and enjoyment of his work. He said, "The most successful people I see are the ones who do have balance in their lives." Hmmmm...
The article is a fascinating read. Check it out.
The most revealing statement in the article to me was a quote from Griffith:
"I based a lot of my self-worth on my success or failure in business."
Personally, I believe this is at the root of the tendency to overwork. Is that you today? Do you base your self-worth on your success or failure in your ministry? Base your self-esteem on the unconditional grace and love your Creator has for you and you'll be Serving Strong!
