Gary R. Collins, counselor, coach, and author of a wide number of books, has an online newsletter to which I subscribe. The latest issue points out why people procrastinate. He highlights the work of Piers Steel, a researcher from the University of Calgary, and his conclusions from a ten year study of procrastinators.
Check out these major causes of procrastination and see if you identify with any of them:
- A lack of self confidence ("people who have doubts about their ability to do something tend to put things off")
- A fear of failure or a fear of being successful
- The tendency to put off tasks that are not enjoyable or boring
- Impulsiveness that causes distraction
