Seth Godin has released a new book, The Dip. In it he describes "the dip" as the long, hard period between beginning something new and finally mastering it. It's at this point that the exciting "honeymoon" phase of the new assignment or goal has worn off AND BEFORE the fulfillment of accomplishment has become a reality.
The Dip is where most want to quit. But Godin says this is precisely NOT the time to quit because, "everything in life worth doing is controlled by the Dip." The Dip is actually a shortcut to success. It's like the midpoint of a marathon. If you can make it through The Dip, you'll be among the few who emerge on the other side as the best in their field.
But what is the secret to dealing with The Dip? Godin says it's in figuring out BEFOREHAND if you're willing to see your project, goal, or outcome all the way through and if it's worth starting in the first place. When the way gets tough, if you haven't settled the issue of whether or not it's worth it, you'll quit. And quitting in the middle of The Dip is a very unfortunate waste of effort and potential.
So, if you're thinking about pursuing a SMART goal and don't think it's worth it, stop before you get to The Dip. If you DO determine your goal is worth the effort, be ready to persevere through difficult times. But making it to the fulfillment of a realized goal is more fulfilling than you could imagine.
Pursue goals worth pursuing, persevere through The Dip, and you'll be serving strong!
