Dr. John Maxwell, in his book, Talent is Never Enough, quotes Dr. Tim Elmore, Founder and President of Growing Leaders, Inc., when speaking of the Titanic disaster:
“The huge and unsinkable ship received 5 iceberg warnings that fateful night, April 14, 1912, just before it went down. When the sixth message, ‘Look out for icebergs!’, came during the wee hours of the next morning, the operator wired back, ‘Shut up, I’m busy!’ Those were his last words over the wire. They underestimated the power of the iceberg and overestimated their own strength. What an accurate description of so many people today!”
One thing I've noticed among people helpers is their tendency to serve at the expense of their own well being. The people helper tends to think that to take care of themselves is equal to being selfish.
But if we, in the people-helping vocation, don't take the time to hammer out a consistent and effective life balance and self care system, we will one day be surprised at the damage it's doing to our "ship."
Don't let pride get in the way of serving for a lifetime. Don't underestimate the power of stress. Don't overestimate your own strength. Remain teachable.
Take the time to care for your own life balance & self care and you'll be serving strong!
